Originally from Pennsylvania, Barb Belknap majored in animation and design at Carnegie-Mellon University and worked for three animation studios, including Rick Reinert Studios in Cleveland.

In her twenties, she worked as an artist in an ecclesiastical art studio and was tutored by a stained glass master in the creation of traditional leaded stained glass panels for churches and monasteries.

Belknap opened her own art glass studio in Pennsylvania in 1980 and again in New Mexico in 1986, where she met her husband, Ty. Together they created many glass art pieces and raised three sons.

In 1993, the Belknaps became owner-publisher of the Sandoval Signpost newspaper, and went on to found and publish Albuquerque Arts magazine in Albuquerque in 1997.

Barb Belknap has continued her interest in glass art alongside her publishing career. She has enjoyed creating multiple private and public art glass commissions, both mosaic and stained glass, under the studio name of Placitas Art Glass.
